Before coming to this class, I thought I had a faint idea about the material that was going to be covered. However after class, I realized that I was wrong. Throughout the semester we will be doing many projects and assignments to further our knowledge about community nutrition. My definition of community nutrition is helping a group of people with the common interest of wanting to improve their health through nutrition, and expanding their knowledge of nutrition.
In class we discussed our group community garden project. We were divided into four different groups, and then our group brainstormed ideas about a target population to grow our garden for. We will assess their nutritional needs, and grow produce to help meet those needs. At home in Mansfield, I grew an herb garden, but now I am very excited to learn how to grow vegetables. It will be great to work in the garden throughout the semester because I feel that it would be a great stress reliever!

In class we went through the steps on conducting a community needs assessment. I am very interested in learning more about this throughout the semester. We also got back in our groups and find tuned our target group for the community garden project. I've been doing some research on gardening throughout the winter months, and what are some key ways to get the best vegetables. I can't wait to start this exciting process.
Over winter break I went to Boston, MA and saw their community gardens. There is a seven year wait just to get one plot! It would love to figure out how to get community gardens more accessible to more people. I hope to live in a big city one day, so access to a community garden would be very important to me. I face this problem now because I live above Broney's, and I don't have a backyard to start my own garden. Maybe I could look into getting my own plot next year in Athens.
