Today we had our Locavore lunch at the park by the ridges. Everyone brought great food such as salads, chips, pasta, ice cream, and breads and cheeses. The weather was a little cold and windy, but other than that it was a great way to end the semester!

Today we went to Holter Holstein Dairy Farm to get a tour and learn more about the farm. The farm is about 40 minutes away from Athens. First we saw the office where the paperwork for registering each coq is handle. Next we went to look at the barn where the calves. We learned when the cows are artificially inseminated, how long they will give milk, and what they do after they can't give milk. There are also a lot of regulations when it comes to the milk they produce. We also saw the dairy parlor where the cows are milked. At the end, we sampled some ice cream that they are going to start producing and selling. I think a dairy farm would be a very interesting place to work!

Today we went to the compost facility, and we were suppose to go on a tour but our tour guide did not show up. Dr. Holben gave us a brief overview of what they do at this facility, and where the compost goes when its ready. We also discussed our plans for the locavore brunch next week, and I'm looking forward to it!

On Thursday, instead of going to class, we went to the student expo to support the students in our major who were presenting. It was very interesting to see everyone's hard work that they put into their research assignments and them get the recognition for it.
I'm excited for class this Tuesday because we are going to a dairy farm.
Here are some pictures from our group when we went to the garden, and the other group was working on the fence:

Today in class, we met with Dr. Holben to discuss how our garden project is going. Monday afternoon we went to the garden to plant our first set of starter plants such as broccoli, kale, and spinach. We are also planning on planting red peppers, flax, and millet in a couple of weeks. Hopefully the frost from a couple nights ago did not damage our plants. I will also be posting photos from gardening later on in the week.

Heidi Anderson came in to talk to our class today about her experience working at WellWorks. She told us some of the things she has to do at her job every day. I like her job because she deals with the community as a whole, and teaches preventative measures to the members of WellWorks. She also organizes a lot of events, and I could see myself enjoying doing that one day.
